BEYOND THE N – WORD

On April 24th, 47 years ago John Lennon released the song ” Woman is the nigger of the world”.

The song aroused numerous strange reactions and John Lennon has been criticised because not all people understood his message. He meant that woman is the slave of the slaves, John said that woman has the worst in life, in everything she does, she has the worst. We can’ t be surprised, a woman receives insults day by day, she is not free to express her self, otherwise, she can be misunderstood and judged. We are all slaves of rules, but for a woman of that a society, it was harder to be respected. In order to clarify the message of the song,  during an interview on ” The Dick Cavett Show”,  John Lennon explained why and how Yoko and he wrote the

James Connolly

song. He resumed the phrase of James Connolly, the Irish republican leader ” The female is the slave of the slaves” affirming

that Connolly was an inspiration for him and for the birth of the song. Many of the radio stations refused to play the song because white people shouldn’t say the N-word.

Unfortunately, people usually stop at appearances and make quick conclusions. In this case, the conclusions are based just on the usage of N-word by a white man. We need to go deeper than that and beyond the words, the preconceptions we can find the meaning of life.

But not everyone didn’t agree with the message that John Lennon wanted to give us. John Lennon demonstrated the good porpuses of his song by showing the words of Ron Dellums, Mayor of Oakland. In order to have a better idea of what is the message of the song, I would like to conclude this post in honour of Ron Dellums who was a distinguished American democratic,  who stood out for his integrity and commitment to progressive ideas and for his optimistic view for peaceful resolution of conflict and stated the following:

“If you define niggers, someone whose lifestyle is defined by others, whose opportunity is defined by others, whose role of society is defined by others, then good news, you don’ t have to be black to be a nigger in this society. Most of the people in America are niggers”

Lyric of ” Woman is the nigger of the world”

Woman is the ni–er of the world
Yes she is, think about it
Woman is the ni–er of the world
Think about it, do something about it

We make her paint her face and dance
If she won’t be a slave, we say that she don’t love us
If she’s real, we say she’s trying to be a man
While putting her down we pretend that she is above us
Woman is the ni–er of the world, yes she is
If you don’t believe me take a look to the one you’re with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Ah yeah, better scream about it
We make her bear and raise our children
And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen
We tell her home is the only place she should be
Then we complain that she’s too unworldly to be our friend
Woman is the ni–er of the world, yes she is
If you don’t believe me take a look to the one you’re with
Oh woman is the slave to the slaves
Yeah, alright

We insult her everyday on TV
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence
When she’s young we kill her will to be free
While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb
Woman is the ni–er of the world, yes she is
If you don’t believe me take a look to the one you’re with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yes she is, if you believe me, you better scream about it

We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
