This is why ” Every Breath You Take” can’t be played on a wedding!

EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE
Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I’ll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I’ll be watching you

Oh, can’t you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I’ll be watching you

Since you’ve gone I’ve been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but it’s you I can’t replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby please

Oh, can’t you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I’ll be watching you

Every move you make
Every step you take
I’ll be watching you

I’ll be watching you

(Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break)

I’ll be watching you

(Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play)

I’ll be watching you

(Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake)

I’ll be watching you

(Every single day
Every word you say) Ooh
(Every claim you stake)

I’ll be watching you

Since 1983 we identify the band The Police with the song “ Every breath you take”.
Still, believe that it’s a romantic and gentle song? Well, that’s wrong! It’s the opposite instead!
This is one of the most misunderstood songs of all time. During an interview for the English newspaper, “ Independent” Sting explained the origin of the song which wasn’t romantic at all. It was a song of possessiveness, jealousy, obsession. of a finished love sinister so described like this from Sting during an interview st BBC radio2:

I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn’t realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control.
                                                                                                                                                                             — Sting

It is a song that Sting wrote in 1982 after he divorced from the wife Frances Tomelty, to begin a relationship with her best-friend Trudie Styler. This situation wasn’t well seen from the public eye. That’s the reason why Sting went in the Caribbean and find his inspiration.
We can see the anger of unhappy feeling by the darkness of the video clip and the angry face of Sting. The lyrics seem like sung by his obsessive ex-lover. In fact, the refrain of the song says:

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I’ll be watching you…

I don’t know you but this refrain makes me shiver, now that I know it, it sounds so creepy to me.
The success of this song and many others comes from the pain and difficulties of life. I would say that even if we misinterpreted the lyrics, the way he sings, the tone, the music and the video clip still transmits pain and sadness. Speaking of sadness, ” Every Breath You Take” has been remade by  P. Diddy with “ I will be Missing You”, that is dedicated to the lost of Notorious B.I.G.
In conclusion, I want to highlight how much music can give us different emotions even from the rhythm or simply by the way it is sung. This is the magic of music that can communicate also with no words.

  • Bellissima la adoro….ho sempre pensato che parlasse di un amore scomparso, e mi ha sempre fatto emozionare, ma non potevo mai immaginare che invece parlasse di un amore possessivo….
